NEW LAWS EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012
Frank J. Riccio II, Esq. July 2012
There are a series of news laws effective July 1, 2012, including some which effect certain criminal laws in Connecticut.
Here is a comprehensive list of new laws effective July 1, 2012: Click here.
One of these new laws effectively changes the definition of "juvenile" to include those are 16 years of age and 17 years of age. This is a dramatic development in Connecticut juvenile justice which appropriately removes children from being punished as adults (unless the offense is considered very serious). Connecticut Public Act 11-157 (specifically sections 12, 18 19) implement the changes in age.
This is yet another example of the progressive nature of the Connecticut legislature in the area of criminal justice - as they have recently passed other popular legislation both decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and repealing the state's death penalty.
